5 Card Stud Rules
The game 5 Card Stud Poker is a game that is rapidly nearing extinction in the world of poker, online poker rooms seldom offer it as an option, the reason being that the suspense factor while playing is far too low to keep players interested. Because there is only a single down (hole) card the players have a good idea of what kind of hand the others can make and the result is that low hands normally win the pot. Although a few poker rooms still offer up 5 Card Stud as an option you will come across its predecessor 7 Card Stud much more often.

The game of 5 card stud is played as follows:

  1. All of the players ante up for the new hand (the ante amount will vary depending on the table limits).
  2. The players receive their first two cards. One card is dealt face down (the 'hole' card) and the other card face up.
  3. There is a round of betting. Betting is started by the player who is showing the highest valued card.
  4. All players receive their third card, face up.
  5. There is another round of betting.
  6. All players receive their fourth card, face up.
  7. Another betting round takes place, but now the betting minimums are doubled.
  8. All players receive their fifth (final) card, face up.
  9. The last betting round takes place.
After this last round of betting, the hands are called and the one with the best hand wins the pot.

Betting Note: the betting in 5-Card Stud Poker is done differently than in Texas Hold'em and Omaha Poker as the player with the highest ranked face up card gets to go first for that round no matter where they sit in relation to the dealer. After this player bets the betting continues in a clockwise direction from him/her around the table.
